Foundation fills hungry tummies with most important meal of the day
The Serve to Grow foundation continues to make a big difference in Fleurhof.
The Serve to Grow Foundation is continuing to be a beacon of hope in impoverished communities.
Having only started in 2019, the foundation has made a huge difference in areas like Fleurhof, Westbury, Newclare, Riverlea and Dobsonville through their feeding initiatives.
In a recent visit by the Roodepoort Record at Fleurhof flats, a team of dedicated volunteers were serving breakfast porridge to children and elderly residents.
According to co-ordinator Julian Appolis, they serve breakfast two to three times a week, with mainly the children being a priority. If there are leftovers, they then ensure that elderly residents or general community members also get something to eat.
“We are trying to bridge the gap in the community and ensure that children have a nutritious meal before the day starts,” he said, adding that there are multiple projects that they are running in this community.
“We not only focused on feeding, but we also assist Early Childhood Development Centres with what they need, supplying nappies to mothers and supporting victims affected by gender-based violence, and empowering general community members.”
“We try to feed where we can, but where there’s an opportunity to grow, do more, and involve the community, we get involved – that’s the aim of our organisation,” he added.
Community members who wish to find out more about the foundation can call the director, Melissa Huber, on 082 854 3203.
