Wilro Lions hosts cancer awareness high tea
The event was well attended by club members and guest speakers, all in support of cancer.
The Lions Club of Wilro Park hosted its annual cancer awareness high tea on October 11, bringing together community members to support a vital cause.
Sixty-two guests attended the event and enjoyed an afternoon of reflection, education, and hope.
The women of the club beautifully decorated the venue, with each of the nine tables symbolising a different type of cancer.
According to club president Sandy van Heerden, the event has been a tradition since 2011, initiated in memory of Marlene Lepley, a former member and past president of the club who sadly lost her battle with cancer.

“This event is held in remembrance of Marlene and to honour those affected by cancer,” said Sandy.
This year’s theme was ‘Rainbow of Hope’, symbolising the diversity of cancers and the hope for early detection and treatment.
Professor Marianne from Wits University was the keynote speaker, offering ideas about the causes, detection, and prevention of cancer.
“The primary goal of the afternoon was to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and to offer support to children battling cancer,” Sandy added.

As part of the event, care bags were handed over to Cansa for children with cancer, with guests Isobel Gomes and Ester Pretorius present to lend their support.
Additionally, the Lions also focused on supporting Nico Botha, a young boy fighting Ewing sarcoma, with the event’s fundraising efforts directed toward assisting him.

“We are also inviting the community to help us raise more funds for Nico. Everyone’s support can make a difference,” she urged.
