Iconic choir announces auditions
The WA Mozart Choir is looking for s few new voices to join them in song.
The WA Mozart Choir has been a stalwart on the local entertainment scene for the past 10 years, having performed at many top venues around the country, including regular productions of operas and musicals at theatres to adoring crowds.
According to conductor Jana Barnard, being involved in the choir is an enormous privilege for her, especially since she was hand-picked by the legendary Carel-Johan de Graaff to succeed him after his passing in 2024.
“We are more committed than ever to take this choir that we love dearly to even greater heights than ever before,” says Barnard.
The WA Mozart Choir was formed through the amalgamation of the Johannesburg German Choir and the Pro Cantare Choir in 2015 and was conducted by De Graaff until shortly before his passing.
Barnard adds she is fully aware that she has big shoes to fill in leading this iconic choir.
“It is a big challenge, but one which I feel I’m more than capable of overcoming.
“I learned from the best, and I have a group of very talented and dedicated musicians behind me that makes the job easy.”
The WA Mozart Choir has big plans for the future.
“We are planning another big production in the next two years,” says Barnard. “We are looking at taking on either an opera or a musical.
“We are also working on expanding the choir and inviting people to come and audition. We would especially like to include a few more male voices in the choir.”
The choir rehearses every Monday from 19:00 to 21:00 at the Hervormde Kerk, 34B Georginia Street, Horison.
