Welcome back, Avumile!

The Northsider welcomes Avumile Seela to their fold.

The Roodepoort Northsider welcomes back its 2024 intern, Avumile Melusi Seela (23), as a journalist.

Avumile, a lifelong West Rander, began his schooling at Bosele Intermediate School and completed his primary education at Patrick Mashego Primary School. He matriculated in 2020.

He enrolled for a journalism diploma at the Tshwane University of Technology in 2022, completing it in 2024. In 2025, he pursued postgraduate studies in journalism (Advanced Diploma in Journalism), which he completed this December.

“My passion for journalism started at a young age as I would listen to Lesedi FM every morning before going to school. My friend’s brother was working as a radio presenter and DJ. We would listen to the radio and start imitating him as a presenter; that built an interest and motivation to study media-related careers,” he said.

After matric, he found himself in an unplanned gap year and began doing commentary on local football games. A few years later, he completed his Work Integrated Learning practical with the Roodepoort Record from March 4 to August 30, 2024.

“I’m currently a journalist with the Northsider and look forward to learning new skills and adding value to the existing team. My goals are to become the voice of the voiceless and regain the public’s trust in the media. I want to become an active young journalist by turning the journalism interest I have had for years into a lifelong professional career.”
