Police recovers body of a man from Zandspruit River
Police urge residents to take precautionary measures when visiting rivers to prevent unnecessary loss of life.
The Gauteng Water Police have recovered the body of a man who drowned in the Zandspruit River in Honeydew.
According to Johannesburg Flying Squad media liaison Raymond Sambo, the incident occurred on Saturday, February 7, when members of the Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services were deployed to the scene at about 15:40.
“The search was stopped due to severely contaminated and unsafe water conditions; the search operation was suspended and resumed the following day,” said Sambo.
“On Sunday, members proceeded to the scene where an inflatable vessel was used to locate the victim, a 55-year-old man. His body was recovered and handed over to Honeydew police members at the scene,” Sambo added.
An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities emphasise the importance of precautionary measures to prevent unnecessary loss of life. Residents are urged to wear life jackets when engaging in any activities in or near rivers, dams, or other open bodies of water.
Police advise parents and guardians to educate children about the dangers of open water and to ensure constant supervision.
