City Power calls on Joburg learners to participate in 2026 schools competition

City Power hosts second leg of EEDSM schools competition, closing date is March 30.

City Power (CP), in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and the Department of Electricity and Energy, has officially launched the second leg of the 2026 Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) Schools Competition.

The entity is inviting high school learners across the city to bring forward innovative ideas that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy.

According to CP general manager Isaac Mangena, the competition forms part of CP’s ongoing commitment to building a culture of responsible energy use while inspiring the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and environmental champions.

“Running under the theme Think Green. Innovation starts with you, the initiative challenges learners to showcase their creativity and practical thinking by developing solutions that help save electricity, protect the environment, and support a more sustainable future for the city,” Mangena explained.

Participants may enter projects under one or both of the 2026 focus areas, which include energy efficiency and renewable energy. Schools can submit entries in three categories, which include artistic posters, short videos and creative.

“Beyond the learning experience, the competition offers exciting rewards. Schools stand a chance to win cash prizes and other incentives, while learners can earn recognition as CP Ambassadors and contribute meaningfully to their communities,” Mangena added.

The competition is open to all qualifying public non-fee-paying high schools within Johannesburg. However, learners whose parents are employed by CP or the City of Johannesburg are not eligible to participate. All entries must be submitted through the school’s appointed representative, and information will be handled in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act.

CP has urged principals, teachers, and learners to seize the opportunity to be part of a programme that combines education, creativity, and real-world impact.

Entries for the second leg of the competition close on March 30. Schools are encouraged to download and complete the official entry form or contact the EEDSM schools competition team on 011 490 7356 or email EEDSMSchoolsCompetition@citypower.co.za.
