Wilgies shine at debate competition

Wilgies teams secured a win in the first rounds of the competition and are now looking for more pleasing results.

Curro Wilgeheuwel (Wilgies) is nurturing confident, informed and articulate learners through active participation in competitive debating hosted at Alma Mater International School.

According to Wilgies’ debate teacher Masego Ramara, the initiative plays a vital role in developing learners’ critical thinking, reasoning and communication skills at school level.

“Debating, often described as an intellectual sport, encourages learners to stay informed about current affairs and to engage meaningfully with the world around them. Through structured argument and teamwork, learners learn how to express their ideas clearly, listen to opposing viewpoints and respond thoughtfully,” said Masego.

Wilgies entered three senior debate teams into the South African Council for English Education (SACEE) league, consisting of learners from grades 10 to 12. Although excited and nervous at the start, the learners demonstrated dedication and resilience throughout the competition.

Masego believes debating significantly boosts learners’ confidence, with many stepping out of their comfort zones as they compete alongside teammates and against learners from other schools.

She noted that most debates address topics reflecting South Africa’s ongoing social crises. These discussions expose learners to the realities of the society in which they live and challenge them to think critically about issues such as inequality, violence, governance and social justice.

“By engaging with these themes, learners are encouraged to analyse complex problems from multiple perspectives and to propose reasoned, practical solutions. This process not only builds awareness but also fosters responsible, informed citizens who are better equipped to engage constructively with national challenges,” she added.

Two of the Wilgies teams won round one, while another secured victory in round two. The school is extremely proud of the learners’ strong performance and commitment to the competition.

The SACEE league is a recurring initiative comprising multiple rounds held throughout the season. Additional fixtures will take place in the coming weeks. Wilgies continues its participation and growth in the competition as learners further develop their debating skills.
