Local foundation brings dignity and relief to the homeless

Masechaba Foundation of Hope continues to change lives despite limited funding.

A community-driven organisation is making a tangible difference in the lives of homeless and vulnerable individuals through compassion, consistency and selfless service.

The Masechaba Foundation of Hope was established in April 2025 by Betty Lekgetho, Tshegofatso Nkosi and Doris Mokoena. Self-funded and rooted in a shared desire to respond to growing community needs, what began as a simple act of kindness has since developed into a structured initiative focused on restoring dignity and hope to those often overlooked.

According to Betty, the heart of the foundation’s work lies in its soup kitchen programme, which currently provides freshly prepared meals to at least 20 homeless individuals every Wednesday and Sunday.

“The programme not only addresses hunger but also creates a safe and welcoming space where beneficiaries feel seen, valued and supported,” she said.

“Hunger is one of the most visible signs of poverty, but it is also one of the most immediate needs we can address. Our goal is not just to feed people, but to remind them that they matter,” she added.

Beyond food security, the foundation has expanded its outreach through a sanitary pads drive aimed at addressing period poverty among women and girls. The initiative seeks to restore dignity, promote menstrual health and raise awareness around menstrual hygiene, ensuring that menstruation does not become a barrier to education, productivity or self-esteem.

Looking ahead, the organisation plans to introduce skills development programmes in 2026, recognising that sustainable change requires more than short-term relief. These initiatives aim to equip vulnerable individuals with practical skills to improve employability and encourage self-reliance.

The foundation operates through personal contributions from its founders, supported by volunteers and community members who donate time, resources and services. Despite limited funding, it continues to grow steadily, driven by strong purpose and community solidarity.
