Newlands organisation moves to new premises and opens a library
Sizo Community Restoration Projects continues to empower the community.
Sizo Community Restoration Projects, founded by Patrichea Maine, has opened a new community centre and library in Newlands that is set to continue empowering and uplifting the community.
The grand opening of Sizo’s new location, which took place on February 7 at 33 Evelyn Road, was a truly special occasion filled with heartwarming testimonies from partners, beneficiaries, and those who’ve witnessed the organisation’s impactful work.
Patrichea started this foundation in 2008 after she was touched by an old man who used to sleep in a park.
“My daughters and I decided to cook for him every Sunday, and he started inviting his friends. I then saw the need in the community, wanted to fill the gap, and that’s how the project started.”
She’s been a beacon of hope, safety, and transformation for the Newlands, Newclare, Westbury, and Claremont communities ever since.
Patrichea’s impact stretches even further, as she is currently feeding the homeless every day and has a soup kitchen at the Newclare informal settlement, feeding about 120 to 180 people.
She also helps victims of fires or any disasters rebuild their lives by providing them with clothes and furniture.

“We were previously operating in my house, and we are very grateful and excited for the new premises because we are trying to do more for the community.
“The new premises offer a wealth of opportunities, including a brand-new library and an expanded soup kitchen.
“Our vision is to provide a safe space for kids to thrive – a healthy meal before school, a warm welcome after school, and support with homework and reading,” she explains.
The centre will also cater to older community members, with a sewing room where they can gather and share skills.
Grade Eight learners will have the chance to learn sewing skills, empowering them to design their own outfits for matric events.
“We’re planning learnerships in office admin and project management, too – it’s all about equipping our community with the tools they need to succeed,” she adds with pride.
The community centre will be available from Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 17:00. For more information, contact Patrichea on 076 492 5844.
