Organisation tackles loneliness and neglect among the elderly
For elderly residents who are often forgotten, Phakamisa Elderly offers support, social connection and a path to healthier, more active ageing.
For many elderly residents in Fleurhof and the Jerusalema informal settlement, loneliness and neglect are daily realities. One local organisation is working to change that.
Founded in 2022 by Penny Sipango, Phakamisa Elderly focuses on protecting vulnerable older people while promoting active, connected ageing. The organisation provides a safe space where elderly residents can socialise, stay active and receive practical support.
Elderly people are among the most vulnerable members of society, often facing isolation, abuse and neglect. Research by the World Health Organisation shows that older people are subjected to physical, verbal, psychological, sexual and financial abuse, as well as neglect.

Penny said Phakamisa Elderly was established to address these challenges at community level.
“We keep the elders engaged with activities like sports, gym, choir and gardening, and we also have a community home-based care programme with 13 caregivers conducting home visits, assisting with chores, collecting medication and providing companionship to those who are bedridden.”
She added that the organisation currently serves the Fleurhof and Jerusalema informal settlement communities, with 60 members in its active ageing group and 156 elderly residents receiving community home-based care.

“We want to protect and promote the rights, well-being and security of older people.
“They’re often forgotten, but we aim to empower them with a healthy lifestyle, a sense of community and a social life so that they can stop feeling depressed and isolated,” she said.
