Welties residents face partial power outage

Even though power was restored in some areas, other parts are still in the dark.

Residents in parts of Weltevreden Park have been without electricity since Monday morning, March 2, following a cable fault linked to the Rhinoceros Switching Station.

The outage falls under the Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre (SDC) of City Power Johannesburg. In its first update issued at 07:16 on Monday, City Power warned that the power system was constrained and urged customers to reduce electricity usage to prevent overload. The utility also noted that bad weather could delay response times.

At the time, City Power reported 181 open calls at the Roodepoort SDC, with 109 of those older than 24 hours. Under “Current Outages”, the utility confirmed that four mini substations supplied by the Rhinoceros Switching Station in Weltevreden Park would remain off until a cable fault between Golf Club Terrace and Tortoise Street was located and repaired.

Ward 89 councillor Zander Shawe has been sharing updates received from City Power with residents on the WhatsApp channels throughout the week.

Yesterday morning at about 08:30, Shawe relayed that the cable fault had been located and that the technical team was sourcing the necessary materials. City Power indicated that repairs would begin once all materials were on site.

However, by 09:23 today, a section of the area remains without electricity. A further update confirmed that repairs had been delayed due to the unavailability of some materials. The required items have since been sourced, and arrangements are being made for collection. Work is expected to get underway once everything has arrived on site.

City Power has thanked residents for their patience while teams work to resolve the outage.

Customers experiencing isolated outages or other electricity-related problems are encouraged to log a call via citypower.mobi or contact the City Power call centre on 011 490 7484 or 0800 202 925. Updates are also being shared through the utility’s official communication channels.
