School calls on community to support nutrition programme

Hoerskool Die Adelaar is collecting non-perishable items and toiletries for learners and their families.

Hoërskool Die Adelaar is taking bold steps to address food insecurity among learners and is calling on the community for support.

The school is continuing with their long-standing nutrition programme, which aims to collect food parcels for learners to take home.

According to Alexandria Moodley, a teacher at the school and the driving force behind the project, the initiative started many years ago, but this year they are going full swing.

She says this year they have a target of collecting 4 000 non-perishable items.

“The need is big in the school, and we are ramping up our efforts to make an even greater impact.

“This project is dear to my heart because I have seen how much difference it makes in the learners’ lives and their families.

“Many of them are coming from child head homes, and I believe it is up to us as teachers, the community, to be there for them,” said Alexandria, adding that they’ve learners fainting due to hunger.

The school also been running a ‘feed a friend’ competition, which encouraged learners who can afford it and staff members to collect non-perishable items for those who need it the most.

However, Alexandria says they are still looking for more items such as canned food, toiletries, sanitary towels, jars of hope and pre-loved clothing, especially with winter approaching.

“We are calling on residents, businesses, and organisations to assist where they can.”
