Curro Wilgies debate team advances to provincial round

The Curro Wilgeheuwel debate team successfully claimed a spot in the provincial stage.

A strong sense of pride and excitement filled the Curro Wilgeheuwel (Wilgies) community as its debating team secured a place in the upcoming provincial championships after years of unsuccessful attempts.

According to Wilgies debate teacher Masego Ramara, debating has steadily gained momentum within the school, driven by learners’ enthusiasm and dedication. Weekly practice sessions, held every Wednesday, have become a cornerstone of the programme.

“During these sessions, learners refine essential skills such as motion analysis, argument construction, and effective delivery. This structured approach has fostered a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging learners to reflect on their performances and strive for better outcomes,” she explained.

Despite the challenges posed by long competition days, the team has demonstrated unwavering commitment. Learners have consistently dedicated their time and energy, making personal sacrifices to represent the school. Their perseverance has not gone unnoticed, earning praise from both teachers and peers.

“One of the standout moments of the season has been the journey of the senior team. After facing disappointment last year and competing in the developmental league, their qualification this year carries special significance. The achievement marks a turning point, with both senior and junior teams celebrating the milestone together,” she expressed.

Wilgies has only qualified for the debating championships twice before, making this accomplishment particularly noteworthy. With a previous opportunity missed, this year’s qualification brings renewed determination and excitement to compete at the highest level.

“Learners have engaged with a wide range of thought-provoking topics throughout the competition, which include media, popular culture, economics, commerce, healthcare, and global issues. These debates have challenged participants to think critically and stay informed about current affairs, further enriching their academic experience,” she said.

The success of the programme is also attributed to the dedicated support of teachers and the team’s coach. Through mentorship, structured training, and constructive feedback, they have played a crucial role in developing learners’ confidence and abilities.

Looking ahead, the team has set ambitious goals for the provincial round. While aiming for the championship title, they are equally focused on securing a place among the top three teams.

Masego told the Roodepoort Northsider that the school community has also played an integral role in this journey.
“Parents have been instrumental in supporting the team, often assisting with transport to practices and competitions. Their involvement has helped ensure that learners can fully participate and thrive.”
