Crawfordians celebrate Earth Day in style
The day saw everyone being excited to be a part of the sessions, and they each received gifts and snacks at the end of the event.
Teachers and learners at Crawford International Ruimsig held a hands-on programme that combined tree planting with a fitness and breathing session in celebration of Earth Day.
One of the parents, Portia Mzozoyana, came up with the idea and approached the school with a suggestion to celebrate Earth Day in a meaningful way on Wednesday (April 22).
According to organiser and teacher Jorden-Joy Gudiso, the event was initially planned to include the preparatory school, but due to scheduling differences, it was held with the college learners instead.
The day began with a tree-planting ceremony, which Jorden-Joy described as a success. Learners from the school’s WESSA environmental and service group, along with other learners from grades eight to 12, and teachers took part in the activity. “It was a quick and simple act, but the legacy and impact of these trees will last longer,” she said.

Learners were encouraged to see themselves as future environmental leaders who can contribute to policy and long-term climate solutions, while also linking environmental awareness with health through breathing and fitness activities.

Four trees were planted across the school grounds, including one near the netball courts and three near the college block. According to Jorden-Joy, the activity also served as a learning experience. “Trees provide clean air as they absorb carbon dioxide, prevent soil erosion, provide shade, natural resources and improve overall health,” she said.

“Everyone got their hands dirty by planting the trees. Learners were excited and even gave the trees nicknames, showing how invested they are in taking care of them,” she expressed.
Following the planting, a breathing and fitness session was held. The session was first held at the school sports grounds and was later moved indoors due to bad weather conditions. Despite the change, learners remained interested in the activity and enjoyed being a part of it until it was over.

According to Jorden-Joy, the fitness class helped connect the importance of clean air to physical health.
“Through the tree-planting ceremony, breathing workshop and fitness session, we hope learners become more mindful of how their actions impact the environment and their health,” she shared.
She added that the goal was to encourage learners to take small, proactive steps that can make a lasting difference.
