Man dies after alleged 25m fall into stream in Grobler Park
Authorities urge the public to exercise caution around open water sources, especially in rivers and dams.
Divers from the Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services recovered the body of a 35-year-old man who allegedly fell into a stream and drowned in Emhlangeni Informal Settlement, Grobler Park.
According to media liaison officer Raymond Sambo, divers were called to the scene at about 10:40 on June 16 following reports of the incident.
Sambo said the man was allegedly cutting a tree when he fell from an estimated height of 25m into the stream.
Upon arrival, divers recovered the body and handed it over to members of the Roodepoort police.
An inquest docket has been opened and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following the tragedy, Sambo urged residents to exercise caution when undertaking potentially dangerous activities near bodies of water.
“Precautionary measures are emphasised to avert needless loss of life. Individuals venturing into dams, rivers or any body of water for any activity are advised to do so only while wearing a life jacket. Parents of young children near open water should educate them about the associated dangers and ensure constant supervision,” said Sambo.
