Wellness Week supports hunger relief efforts

As hunger continues to affect millions across South Africa, partnerships like this one are vital in ensuring a brighter and better nourished future.

Sixty students from IIE MSA rolled up their sleeves to support the fight against hunger during the campus’s recent Wellness Week.

Partnering with Rise Against Hunger Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to ending hunger and empowering communities, the students packed a remarkable 6 480 balanced and nutritious meals in just one day.

The meal packs – comprising rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and essential vitamins and minerals – will go a long way in supporting vulnerable communities. According to Nadine Sandrock, national fundraising and marketing manager at Rise Against Hunger Africa, the food will feed 28 children at a Childhood Development Centre for an entire year.

“We are so grateful for the continued partnership with IIE MSA. The student champions did an amazing job. These meals will not only nourish young children but will also give them the energy and nutrition needed to learn and grow,” Nadine said.

For Teana Ramroop, a postgraduate student, the experience was deeply meaningful.

“Participating in the Rise Against Hunger packing initiative was an inspiring experience. Seeing the dedication of my fellow peers to address hunger and to make an impact on communities was motivating. Knowing that our teamwork contributed to making a difference was even more rewarding,” she said.

The initiative was supported by IIE MSA Cares, the campus’s student volunteer body. The group plays an active role in connecting students with local NGOs and encourages volunteerism as part of a holistic student experience that aligns with IIE MSA’s strategic mission of social responsibility and community upliftment.
