Welties host vibrant Soapbox Derby

The spirit of excitement and competition filled the atmosphere at Welties during soapbox derby event.

Teamwork, creativity and school spirit took centre stage at Weltevreden Park Primary School (Welties) when learners took part in the school’s Soapbox Derby on Friday, June 22.

The event brought learners together for a day of fun and friendly competition after the completion of their examinations. Working in teams, they designed, built and raced their soapbox creations, showcasing creativity, problem-solving skills and teamwork.

According to Welties co-head of the Grade 7 fundraising committee, Nicola Thuynsma, the event aimed to encourage teamwork while fostering a strong sense of school pride.

“The significance of the event was to get the learners to work together in teams and to build school spirit. All the learners at the school had lots of fun, and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves,” said Thuynsma.

The Soapbox Derby also served as a Grade 7 fundraising initiative, with proceeds going towards the learners’ year-end function. It provided an opportunity to raise funds while creating lasting memories for the school community.

Held after the examinations, the event gave learners and teachers the chance to relax and celebrate the end of a busy term.

“The balance is imperative to promote school pride, and since the learners have just finished exams, they all needed to spend the day relaxing and having fun with their classmates. It ended the term on a high note for both learners and teachers,” Thuynsma added.

Thuynsma said the success of the Soapbox Derby reflects Welties’ commitment to creating opportunities that promote teamwork, community involvement and a positive school culture.
