Ithuba riders impress on Fast One trails
The team’s latest race saw several riders earn top results while gaining experience for future competitions.
Sixteen riders from Ithuba Development MTB recently competed in the Fast One MTB earlier in July, participating in the 25km and 50km races. According to Ithuba’s co-founder and head coach Phillimon Sebona, the team recorded several notable results during the event.
“In the 25km race, four of our 11 riders finished in the top 10,” said Sebona.
One of the riders, Siyanda Ncube, claimed first place overall in the 25km race, finishing first in his category and as the first male rider. Ncube also received the Fastest Rider of the Day award for the 25km event. Sandile Sibanda also secured second place in the Sprogs Boys category.
Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Sebona said the riders continue to show progress.
“We’re seeing real growth. The riders are starting to understand the sport much better, race smarter and support each other on course,” Sebona expressed.
He said the main challenge during the race was that some riders missed a turn after becoming too focused on racing.
“In the heat of the race, some riders became so focused on racing that they missed a turn, even though the route was well marked. It was a good learning moment,” he explained.
Sebona said events such as the Fast One provide valuable racing experience because they expose riders to large fields and competitive race conditions while helping them develop race tactics, pacing and teamwork.
He added that the riders enjoyed the fast-flowing sections of the course, the open roads and the opportunity to ride in groups.
“The biggest takeaway was unity. The riders came out of this event with a much stronger sense of teamwork. They worked together, encouraged each other and made sure everyone got to the finish line. That team spirit was the highlight for us,” he said.
According to Sebona, the team is now preparing for the Ford Trailseeker, the primary and high school series races this month and September, and the School Series Finals.
“We’re incredibly proud of every single rider who pinned on a number. Fast One showed us the progress our development programme is making. We’re even more motivated to keep growing opportunities for young riders in our community. Thank you to the parents, coaches and supporters who make this possible,” he said.
