CKPS celebrates Gladiator Day

Gladiator Day united the school community in celebration of fun and learning.

Constantia Kloof Primary School (CKPS) invited learners, parents, and staff to one of the school’s most anticipated annual events.

Gladiator Day, on March 19, was a vibrant celebration that blended physical activity, creativity, and experiential learning.

According to the school’s deputy principal, Janine Fleetwood, the event transformed an ordinary school day into an energetic arena of obstacle courses, team challenges, and interactive games. Designed to be inclusive and engaging, the event offered a wide range of activities suited to different interests and abilities, ensuring that every learner can participate and enjoy the experience.

“There was something for every child, whether they are competitive, creative or simply there to enjoy the moment with their friends,” said Janine.

She believes the concept behind the day draws inspiration from ancient Roman themes, reimagined in a child-friendly and educational way. With arena-style setups and team-based activities, learners were encouraged to embrace values such as courage, teamwork, and perseverance. Optional dress-up elements, including themed accessories and colours, add to the festive atmosphere without placing pressure on participation.

“Parents and families play an active role in the event, contributing to both the organisation and the overall spirit of the day. Their involvement has helped establish Gladiator Day as a strong community-building initiative, fostering closer connections between the school and other stakeholders,” she added.

Despite the fun and exciting games, safety remained a key priority; all activities were carefully supervised by staff and parent volunteers. Clear guidelines, well-maintained equipment, and on-site first aid support ensure that learners can take part in a secure environment. CKPS hosts Gladiator Day annually, and learners are always looking forward to it.

“The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Learners look forward to it each year, and parents value the opportunity to be actively involved. It has become a true community-building event for the school,” she concluded.
