Wushu champs showcases talent and growth in Roodepoort
Athletes from various districts in Gauteng showcased their skills and talents, hoping for a provincial squad call-up.
The Gauteng Provincial Wushu Federation (GPWF) invited athletes from across Gauteng and beyond to the Gauteng Provincial and Open Wushu Championship on March 14.
According to GPWF secretary general Riana van Coller, the competition served as the official qualifier for the Gauteng Provincial Squad, with successful athletes earning the opportunity to compete at the national championships later this year.

The event opened with a traditional Southern Lion Dance, symbolising good fortune, strength, and prosperity. The performance captivated spectators as the lion scattered blessings and unveiled scrolls, wishing health and success to those in attendance.

Competitors showcased a wide range of Wushu disciplines throughout the day, from fast-paced, highly technical forms to full-contact Sanda bouts. Judges evaluated routines as excitement built among supporters, culminating in a series of intense Sanda matches that demonstrated the rising standard of fighters in the region.
Van Coller said the GPWF is dedicated to making Wushu [Kung-Fu] more inclusive and high-achieving, using development initiatives to make a positive impact on South African society. Guided by the national federation’s momentum, the GPWF hosted the event to showcase its progress and bring greater awareness to the sport across the province.

The federation has planned to host other events in Johannesburg and Tshwane and aims to create more opportunities for athletes to gain exposure, refine their skills, and compete consistently at a high level.
As the sport continues to gain momentum, the 2026 championship stands as a testament to the dedication of athletes and organisers working to elevate Wushu in South Africa. The Gauteng Provincial Squad is expected to include participants who received high points.
