Florida Hills cricketer selected for Gauteng Central U13 squad

The Johannesburg West Region player shines with a century before stepping up to provincial level.

Years of dedication to cricket have paid off for Florida Hills resident David Holland following his selection for the Gauteng Central U13 squad.

The talented cricketer first picked up a bat at six when he began playing Mini Cricket at school. Since then, his passion for the sport has grown, along with his determination to improve his game.

“This means so much to me, as it is a reflection of all the hard work I have put into cricket over many years,” David said.

He added that his journey has not always been easy, but setbacks have only pushed him to work harder.

“Despite some setbacks, I’ve had to dig deep and work hard to bounce back,” he said.

David’s journey to making the Gauteng team started when he was selected to play for the Johannesburg West region. He played in his first Johannesburg West tournament, the Henri Venter U13 T20 Night Tournament, where he made an immediate impact by scoring an impressive 139 runs in the opening match.

The night tournament continued with five 20-over matches, although rain washed out the final two games. The competition then continued with three 50-over matches, followed by two further T20 matches on September 25 and 26.

David is now preparing to take his cricket to the provincial stage, with the Gauteng Central U13 team set to participate in both 50-over and T20 matches from December 1 to 4.

While the provincial selection is a major achievement, David has his sights set even higher. His ultimate ambition is to represent South Africa, first targeting a place in the U19 national side before eventually hoping to pull on the Proteas jersey.

Away from cricket, David is a well-rounded young sportsman and a public speaker. He is part of the school’s A team for swimming and athletics, where he competes in shot put. He also plays first-team rugby, where he serves as captain, and represents the school in hockey.

For now, however, his focus is on making the most of his opportunity with Gauteng Central and continuing to develop as a cricketer.
