EXCLUSIVE: ‘Gentlemen’s club’ DJ gives a peak into his territory in the city of Joburg

JOHANNESBURG – Club DJ lays bare the intricate night-time offerings of one of Jozi's most colourful club settings.

The City of Joburg is home to a myriad of spectacular hangout spots frequented by equally vibrant characters. At the heart of a buzzing night-time scene is the famed Royal Park Hotel which is known as the largest adult entertainment venue in Africa.

On any given day, music can be heard reverberating against its glass door entrance. As one is ushered deeper into the depths of the club, an exhilarating experience becomes apparent as ladies are seen on display at various illuminated spots.

Several large speakers mounted around the main bar transcend the barriers of sound as they play at full throttle. The elevated DJ box reigns supreme as king of the decks. City Buzz spoke to DJ Mongsta, real name Mongezi Nkabinde (25), who is a resident club DJ at Royal Park. Nkabinde gave City Buzz an exclusive peek into a day in the life of a club DJ. He was seemingly in the zone and pointed out the expensive-looking equipment – a portable Pioneer CDJ-850s, a Pioneer DJM-700 mixer, and a Serato mixer.

DJ Mongsta divulged, “I began in January last year. My style is mellow and raw and spontaneously easing. It’s creativity at work with a basic ability and an understanding of music. I’m a deep house head but playing here, I play across all genres of music relevant to the crowd – and those are the perks of being a DJ, I guess.

“Crowds are different. A minority visit Royal Park for the music, whereas the greater majority come here for the ‘fun’.”

He also made known his aspirations of someday starting an events management company, hoping his experience in meeting people in this surreal and enchanting environment would bolster his chances.

“In my time here, networking with people who are talented and accomplished in their own right has been a highlight. This kind of place is typically frowned upon, but it’s not about where you find yourself but what you do with where you find yourself,” he concluded.
