Local school raises R86 000 for The Hope School through annual swimathon

St Katharine’s School learners made a big splash for a good cause, raising funds in their annual swimathon to support therapy upgrades at The Hope School.

St Katharine’s School in Parktown West held a special assembly on May 23 to hand over a cheque to the Jumping Kids Organisation.

Earlier this year, the school hosted its annual swimathon – an event held in honour of Victoria Barry. The swimathon is a long-standing tradition that brings the school community together to raise money for a good cause.

This year, the learners raised just over R86 000. The money will be used to improve the physical therapy space at The Hope School in Westcliff, which supports children with physical disabilities.

Headmistress Alison Jennings said the school’s relationship with Jumping Kids began when a family at the school introduced the organisation. She said the funds raised would go towards renovations at The Hope School, including painting, new flooring and therapy equipment.

“While it’s a small contribution and won’t take them very far, it is a step closer to what they are aiming for,” said Jennings. “This experience offers our children an opportunity to express gratitude for what they have.”

Michael Stevens from the Jumping Kids Organisation shared his appreciation for the ongoing support from the school. He described the partnership as a strong and consistent one that has grown from a simple connection into a meaningful collaboration.

“It is wonderful to have the consistency of a school that truly supports what we are trying to achieve, and we are incredibly grateful for their backing,” said Stevens.

He added that the new therapy centre at The Hope School was in the planning phase, with renovations expected to begin during the second-term holidays. Improvements, such as painting, new flooring, and equipment, will be implemented gradually throughout the year.
