Park dumpers face fine

City Parks takes action against illegal dumpers.

Dunkeld’s Hugh Wyndham Park took on the appearance of a dump site when Kent Road residents allowed builders to dump rubble in the park.

The two piles of rubble appear to have come from two different complexes overlooking the park and its wetland.
Johannesburg City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley said that Metro police and the Park Rangers would visit the site to warn those responsible to remove the rubble and reinstate the affected parkland or face penalities.
“Metro police indicated that the transgressor faces a R1000 fine, and City Parks will ensure that the owner is also held accountable for the rehabilitation costs which could vary between R7000 and R20 000,” she said.
Moodley urged residents who build or renovate to hire a skip for rubble, and to ensure the rubble is disposed of at a dedicated site; not in a park or in open spaces.

“This sort of disregard for public spaces, where families and children are supposed to enjoy a tranquil outdoor experience, has far reaching implications. Rubble has the potential to attract further dumping which can attract rodents and affect neighbourhood aesthetics, which can impact on property values as well as the health of residents using the facility,” said Moodley.
“City Parks and Joburg Zoo call on all residents to comply with the bylaws of the city. We ask residents to report transgressors to Joburg Connect,” she urged.
