Plan to develop Tyrone Avenue

PARKVIEW - There are plans afoot to develop the Tyrone Avenue in front of the Village Centre in Parkview to eliminate the parking hassles.

Chairperson of the Parkview Residents Association announced the plan to construct Tyrone Square at the association’s annual general meeting.

Association member Karien Norval elaborated that the plan was to open the library parking onto Tyrone Avenue with a view to ease traffic congestion.

She said the aim was to eliminate the traffic chaos caused by the delivery trucks that double-park on the road and offload in front of the shops.
The proposal also looked into the possibility of the delivery trucks utilising the space behind the shops.

The square will have kiosk space for the people who have been selling in Parkview for a long time.

There is already the architectural design for the Square in place. However, the association needed a civil engineer to look at how the plan will impact on the infrastructures such as storm-water drainage.

Norval said the efforts have been made to meet with the road agency to discuss the plan.

“What is important is to get the buy-in from the shop owners,” she said.

On June 13, the association will host the Golf Day to raise funds for the Tyrone Square project.

A resident Andrew Gilbert wanted to know about the cost of the development. Lenaham said the estimated cost would be R3 million, excluding other improvements on the pavements.

He said the cost has been a bugbear because the project was solely the responsibility of the residents.

Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe welcomed the idea and urged the residents to take ownership of their car parking problems. She said residents should not “give the municipality any ammunition to implement the pay parking system”.

Forsythe said the proposal had been taken to the MMC for transport.

According to her, the project was in fact “the embodiment of what the council wanted to do”.
