Students kicked out of Wits trial

JOBURG - Students at Wits University have complained about the lack of "transparency and administrative justice" at the trial against the 11 students who protested an Israeli-embassy funded concert in March.

The complaint was made after they were turned away at the doors of the trial on 16 July at the university’s Professional Development Hub.

Muhammed Desai of Boycott Divestment Sanctions South Africa issued the press statement about the alleged incident at the trial.

The statement said that students were kicked out after a submission was made by the university’s legal representative, on behalf of the institution’s management.

One of the members of the student representative council on trial, Tokelo Nhlapo, said, “I am disappointed that as an elected member of the Wits Student Representative Council, my supporters, voters and others are being kicked out and prevented from being here. This trial is slipping into the direction of becoming a kangaroo court.”

Advocate J.A. Woodward S.C, who is presiding over the trial, has been accused of preventing reporters and members of the public from attending the trial.
