City incorrectly delivers pre-termination notice to Mandela

HOUGHTON - A pre-termination notice from the City Council left on the gate of Nelson Mandela's Houghton Estate home was delivered to the wrong address.

The notice stated that the municipal account was in arrears to the tune of R6468.48, and that services would be restricted or discontinued, or legal action would be instituted, should the amount not be paid in 14 days’ time.

According to Eyewitness News, the notice dated 1 August was left at the former President’s residence over the weekend.

City Council’s customer communications and stakeholder management acting director, Kgamanyane Maphologela, said the notice had been incorrectly delivered. The notice was intended for another customer in a neighbouring suburb.

“The City wants to convey an apology to the Mandela family for any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident. City officials have been sent to the Mandela family and Children’s Foundation to apologise for the embarrassment to the family. Whilst a full investigation is being conducted as to how this error occurred, the City has decided to take action against the people involved,” said Maphologela.

He added that customer data was being “cleansed and updated” and occasional errors such as this might occur.

“We apologise to any customer who might have had a similar experience,” he said.
