Saheti celebrates exam success

JOBURG - Academic excellence has become an entrenched habit at Saheti School, as yet again the class of 2013 maintained the school’s unbroken

100 percent pass rate, and achieved a record 142 distinctions in the Independent Examination Board’s FET National Senior Certificate examinations.

Of the 55 matric pupils, 46 percent received multiple distinctions, while 93 percent of the group achieved a bachelor degree entrance pass. Outgoing executive head of the school Anastasia Krystallidis attributed the success to Saheti’s philosophy of offering its pupils opportunities to take academic subjects of their choice, rather than limiting their options. Krystallidis said, “It’s commendable that 87 percent of our candidates registered for eight subjects or more, with some taking up to twelve subjects, achieving distinctions in many of these subjects. These included modern Greek, which is a designated subject for entry to tertiary education, [and] elected to be written by many of our matriculants who are not of Greek descent, as well as advanced programme mathematics and advanced programme English.”

She added that the key to academic success in a school like Saheti – which caters for pupils of diverse academic abilities – is to ensure that different learning styles are “tapped into”. Krystallidis said, “The magic is to recognise [both] those who need to soar to illimitable heights and those who require more structured support. Our results are a testament to the motivation and diligence of our teachers and pupils.”

According to Krystallidis, thanks to the expert guidance of the Independent Examinations Board, the school has always had a responsibility to provide top academic results for future tertiary study exemption; the ex-pupils will, in turn, feed into society to enhance economic development and sustainability.

Krystallidis will retire after 39 years at the school and was confident that the school’s reputation for academic excellence would continue to grow from strength to strength.
