Historic college up for exploration

HOUGHTON - Perched high on a ridge, St John's College's graceful yet imposing buildings are a beloved Johannesburg landmark.

The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation will offer people the opportunity to explore the historic school and gain special insight into its life, culture and ethos this month.

The foundation’s Eira Bond said, “From the Honours Boards, which speak for themselves of the college’s illustrious alumni, to the buildings [by] Frank Fleming gracing the Houghton skyline, we can follow the story of the school’s development.”

Founded in 1898, the school endured a few rocky early years, and survived to become renowned for its contribution to the city’s heritage.

The three-hour walking tour will take place on 18 January at 2pm. Meet Janet Hughes and Clare van Zwieten in the school’s secure parking area off St John’s Road, Houghton. Booking is essential.
