Contractor botches street names

Incomplete, inconsistent and misspelt street names on Joburg’s road signs have left motorists scratching their heads but the confusion would soon be resolved, the Johannesburg Roads Agency said.

Several street names have been misrepresented on road signs, causing confusion and frustration to the city’s motorists.

The spelling of Jan Smuts Avenue varies from one painted kerb sign to the next, while at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Rivonia Drive the numeric part of ’10th Avenue’ was missing and only the suffix was painted on the kerb.

According to Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers, the agency was aware of the misspelt street names, which were the result of “poor services” rendered by one of its contractors.

“Street names form an integral part of the city’s rich heritage, and as such, misspelling or labelling incomplete street names, is unacceptable. We wish to sincerely apologise to all residents,” Peters-Scheepers said.

She said that a team had already begun rectifying the mistakes, adding that a roads agency supervisor would oversee all work undertaken by contractors in order to ensure that no further errors are made.

In 2013, the public noticed that Sandton Drive had been incorrectly spelt “Santon Drive” on a road sign just outside Sandton City, while William Nicol Drive was misspelt “William Nichol Drive” at the intersection of Sandton Drive.

The Sandton Drive street name had since been corrected but the William Nicol Drive sign remained incorrect.

Peters-Scheepers has urged the public to contact the roads agency, regarding any road and storm water issues on 0860 562 874 or hotline@jra.org.za.
