Golf competition supports CANSA

In March the Sanlam Cancer Challenge will tee off its 22nd year as South Africa’s biggest charitable sporting event with a place in the South African Golf Hall of Fame, with the support of Ernie Els and thousands of golfers around the country.

Over 36 000 golfers took to the fairways at clubs around South Africa in 2013 to help raise a record R3.3 million for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

This contributed half the amount needed for annual research into cancer and possible cures.

“We are extremely humbled by the support we receive from the Sanlam Cancer Challenge and the South African golf community,” said Sue Janse van Rensburg, CEO of CANSA.

“South Africa’s golfers are some of our strongest allies and supporters in the fight against cancer. It takes so much work to arrange the hundreds of club competitions around the country, and we are honoured to have Sanlam and the golfers support us in such a committed fashion.

Sanlam sponsorship manager Gary van Loggerenberg said they were blown away by the support received in the 2013 series and the money raised.

“The success of this series and its effectiveness in the fight against cancer relies on every single golfer in South Africa to play his or her part, from our patron Ernie Els to the club golfer. And we appreciate every bit of support… The Sanlam Cancer Challenge enables club golfers anywhere in the country to do something positive and make a real impact through the game they love.”

With over 100 000 South Africans diagnosed with cancer every year, South African golfers play a vital role through the Sanlam Cancer Challenge in raising enough funds for research and treatment.

Since its inception in 1993, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge has raised over R33 million for CANSA to assist with cancer control programmes focusing on prevention, care and support.

Registrations are now open at www.sanlamcancerchallenge.co.za for the 2014 series, which will begin in March with roughly 800 club competitions. This will be followed by regional competitions to determine the 100 golfers who will qualify for the finals at the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Course at Sun City from 20 to 21 October.
