A new era for Fairmount Bowling Club
After the long arm of the law finally caught the previous Fairmount Bowling Club bar manager in connection with selling liquor without a licence, the club has allowed a new team to run the bar.
Fairmount Bowling Club has turned over a new leaf.
This after the club’s previous bar manager was arrested for selling liquor without a licence (Manager bowled out week ending 4 April 2014).
Gavin Shapiro, the new bar manager said, “We will bring a new new era to the club, but we won’t be forgetting the existing culture and values of the club. We we want to make it more attractive and appealing to all ages as our mission is to increase the membership of the club.
“Before the recent bad experience, the club had been a pinnacle part of the community and we want to keep that for the generations to come.”
The club belongs to the City of Johannesburg and is run by a committee elected by bowling members. North Eastern Tribune spoke to Chad Thomas of IRS Forensic Investigations who has been involved in many investigations involving properties owned by the city council. Thomas said the Fairmount Bowling Club bar had been hijacked by an outside operator who took over the running of the bar.
“I am glad that sponsors came forward and funded the refurbishment [of the club] in accordance with the City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Property Company guidelines and lease conditions,” he said. “Far too many public amenities such as bowling clubs have fallen prey to individuals with selfish and sometimes nefarious intentions.”
The club’s president, Allen Elston said the club would ensure that liquor was not being sold to members of the public in an illegal manner.
