Stay easy in Newtown

JOBURG - The City Lodge Hotel Group is planning to open its first hotel in downtown Johannesburg towards the end of 2015.

The proposed 148-room City Lodge Hotel Newtown will be developed in the exciting Newtown Junction.

The cost of the development is expected to be about R145 million.

With the Newtown site having been handed over to the developers in mid-August, initial ground works are expected to begin soon.

The hotel, to be situated on the corner of Gwigwi Mrwebi and Miriam Makeba Streets, will feature seven levels, including two parking levels and 60 dedicated parking bays. It will have two boardrooms, a swimming pool, a coffee shop, a sundowner bar and a mini-gym.

“This is a particularly exciting project for us,” said Clifford Ross, the City Lodge Hotel Group’s chief executive.

“While we have a large number of hotels in the greater Johannesburg area across all four of our Courtyard Hotel, City Lodge Hotel, Town Lodge and Road Lodge brands, this will be our first downtown hotel in the city.

“Newtown has become one of the city’s most vibrant nodes and we believe it is an excellent location that will attract and meet the accommodation needs of both business and leisure travellers.”
