Film society to celebrate Maria Callas
JOBURG - THE life and career of one of the 20th century's most influential opera singers, Maria Callas, will be celebrated this month by the Majestic Film Society.
The epitome of a diva, and an icon of style and elegance, Callas still ranks among the world’s top-selling classic artists.
Born in New York City to Greek parents, the charismatic singer received her musical education in Athens, before establishing her career in Italy.
From there, Callas took the music world by storm.
Her bel canto technique, dramatic flair, and wide-ranging voice were praised by critics, and she performed in some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.
Callas was no stranger to suffering and scandal, most notably her affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who later left her for Jacqueline Kennedy.
On 16 September, 1977 Callas died of a heart attack after spending several years living in near-isolation in Paris. She was 53 years old.
“Her extraordinary life and voice will be celebrated with a screening of Tony Palmer’s lauded documentary, Maria Callas: La Divina – A Portrait, which will be followed by a meze-style supper,” said Radio Today broadcaster and film commentator Selwyn Klass.
The screening, presented by the society, Radio Today, and Warner Classics, will take place on 19 October at the Ditsong Museum of Military History auditorium, Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 6pm. Booking is essential.
