First high-tech fibre optic security system to be installed

CRAIGHALL PARK - A project that has been five years in the making, the Craigpark Residents Association (CRA) and security company CSS Tactical have partnered to install a high-tech fibre optic security system in the neighbourhood.

The installation of this network makes the area the first un-gated community in Johannesburg to be linked up to a fibre optic security system, offering residents a sense of security while still allowing for unrestricted movement through the neighbourhood.

“We’ve noticed that the installation of camera’s significantly reduce crime in a residential area,” said Ricky Croock of CSS Tactical. “There was a lot of planning that went into this. The CRA carefully combed through the contracts and reviewed the business model to ensure that it was cost-effective and sustainable.”

Craighall and Craighall Park is an area with a strong community following which has been crucial to the process. Though there has been independent fibre optic initiatives taken in other residential areas, this project is unique in that it places the security aspect as a priority. The installation of fibre optics will not only provide residents with access to faster internet, but will form a crucial part of an integrated security system.

This integrated security system involves the laying of fibre optic cables on every road in the neighbourhood, the installation of 107 cameras and 27 automatic number plate recognition cameras. It will also include the use of an artificial intelligence software, i-Sentry which uses a smart-analysis system that learns routine, and is able to detect and alert operators to unusual activity.

The first phase, the layering of the cable and installation of cameras through the neighbourhood is expected to be completed by December this year. The second phase involves connecting residents to the system and extending the fibre optic network into their homes, allowing them access to the street cameras in their immediate vicinity.
