Longstanding excavation on Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues sees progress

JRA is set to continue working on the Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenue excavation, with construction of the manhole and junction box happening this week, and, thereafter, tarring will follow.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirmed to the publication on May 5 that there is progress on Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues in Craighall.

JRA acting head of operations Mpho Maruping said: “At this stage, the teams are constructing the manhole and junction box. This scope of work will continue this week, ending May 8, and thereafter the backfilling to road surface level will follow.”

A reporter, along with Ward 90 councillor Renate van Onselen, visited the site on May 2, where she noted that although the progress was slow she was glad it was finally happening after 5 months of dangerous excavations.

“The Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues excavation seems to be making some progress, which has resulted in working traffic lights.

However, it remains a danger for as long as it remains open. I am unimpressed with the turnaround time from JRA, as well as their communication. I will continue inquiring about the excavation.”

The publication will continue being in communication with JRA until the completion of the repairs and taring.
