Taxi strike causes disruptions

CRAIGHALL - Thousands of commuters in Gauteng were left stranded this morning after taxi associations announced a one day strike.

The Jan Smuts Avenue route which runs between the Randburg to the Bree Street Taxi rank in Braamfontein, is the main travel route that takes commuters through to several northern suburbs which include Craighall, Rosebank, Parkhurst, Parkview, Killarney and Houghton.

Traffic along Jan Smuts during peak morning hours was noticeably sparse as only a few taxis could be spotted along the main road.

It is reported that only a few taxis are operating from the these two main taxi ranks.

Employers and schools have been urged to be sympathetic as members of the public relying on the service may arrive late, or not at all, due to the strike.

Taxi associations claim that this is a one day strike in protest of e-tolls and licensing issues.
