Counting up the years

LYNDHURST - Tarentaal Village residents Andrew (83) and Jean Kennedy (82) celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on 11 December.

The couple, who were married 60 years ago at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belgravia, said their five children and nine grandchildren have always been the centre of their world.

When their children were young, days were filled with ballet, eisteddfods and water polo, which their son Drew stills plays actively, representing Western Province in the sport. The Kennedys’ grandchildren have followed suit, also excelling in the sport.

The couple lived for years near the lake in Florida, but recently moved to the Rand Aid Association retirement village. According to Jean, while they miss the sound of children’s laughter coming from Florida Lake, she and Andrew delight in the monkeys that often visit their new home, as well as the lovely grounds and caring people who are now their neighbours.

And what is the secret to their long and successful union? Andrew said it was mutual respect and a sense of humour that kept a marriage strong.
