Street lights leave residents in the dark

SYLVIA PASS - Rolling blackouts leave the city streets in darkness for hours at a time, but with large numbers of the suburbs' street lamps failing to firstly function, conditions do not always improve when the lights come back on.

Ward 73 councillor Marcelle Ravid has called a meeting with City Power representatives to point out the locations of large numbers of broken street lights, which she says she has been reporting for weeks without success. Cancelled last week due to load shedding, the tour of the ward’s inoperative lights is due to take place on 9 December, and may finally afford residents some relief from an increasingly dangerous and frustrating situation.

Residents of Sylvia Pass will be particularly relieved to see some maintenance done. According to one woman, who lives near the intersection of Goodman Terrace and Grove Road, repeated reports of an inoperative street light on the busy corner have failed to produce a response. The resident believes that two accidents in the last week can be attributed to the light’s failure, which leaves a dark corner on the busy road; even darker and more dangerous for the vehicles that speed down Goodman Terrace.

The outcome of Ravid’s meeting with City Power remains to be seen, but in her words, “Why does it have to come to this?”

City Power has not yet responded to requests for comment before publication.
