Taxi owner shot dead at Bree Street taxi rank

JOBURG - A TAXI owner has been shot and killed at the Bree taxi rank in Newtown on 3 February.

The Johannesburg Metro Police were driving along Bree Street when they noticed commuters running away from the scene, screaming. Upon investigating they discovered that a male had been shot and killed.

According to Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, it is believed the taxi owner who was shot nine times, was affiliated to the Faraday Taxi Association.

Mamonyane said, “On 2 February, the taxi owner reported to the South African Police Service that he was receiving threats via SMS.”

She added that two men entered the taxi rank and shot the taxi owner. The matter was handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.

Faraday Taxi Association transports commuters from Joburg Central to Clearwater Mall.
