Pedestrian shot in Hillbrow

HILLBROW - Police are investigating after a man was found dead in Leyd Street, Hillbrow, on 11 February.

According to Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Nduduzi Zondo, police were called to the corner of Leyds and Quartz streets after a man was allegedly shot in the head at about 8pm.

The call to police was made by the man’s female companion, who was walking down the street with him when the pair was reportedly approached by 10 men.

One of the men allegedly drew a firearm and shot the victim in the head, before all of the men fled the scene.

A press release issued by ER24 stated that paramedics were dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim lying on his back on the road next to a storm water drain. He had sustained fatal injuries to his head and was declared dead on the scene.

“Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for him,” said ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing, adding that authorities were already on the scene when paramedics arrived.

According to Zondo, police are investigating the case.

“At this stage, we don’t know what is the motive,” he said.
