CORRECTION: Elderly couple held hostage in Orange Grove home

ORANGE GROVE - Three men broke in to an elderly couple's home on 1st Street in Orange Grove earlier this morning.

* A previous version of this article said Stallion Security went to the incorrect address when reporting on the incident. North Eastern Tribune has learnt that this was not the case. The Tribune apologies and retracts the statement. We further  apologise for any inconvenience caused by the statement.

The situation lasted for almost three hours and it finally ended when the son of the couple came home to visit his parents. This spooked the suspects which then made them flee.

The son, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “My parents have lived here for 58 years, I arrived this morning and my parents did not answer the gate. I can luckily get onto the property but not into the house. I saw a male run across from the one side of the house to the other. I immediately started shouting. The lady from across the road alerted the police. I did not know how many males there were in the house. I saw one jump out of the back window.

Sergeant Nurse Sanyane said, “Three suspects broke into a house on 1st street in Orange Grove. We are currently investigating this break in. It is unacceptable that an elderly couple can be held up for three hours. We will be working round the clock to make an arrest.”

Ward committee member, Stanley Letsoala, head of public safety, said, “Three men broke into an elderly couple’s home on 8 March.”
