Ledwaba was shot in the early hours of 24 March while responding to a robbery near Park Station in the CBD. He sustained multiple wounds on his upper body and died on the scene.
“We are all saddened by the loss of one of our members,” said Gauteng Provincial police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu speaking at the service at Gauteng Province Legislature’s Duncan Hall.
The hall was packed to capacity with friends, family, and colleagues who spoke fondly of the kind person that was Ledwaba. Constable Thabane Khumalo studied with Ledwaba and spoke about him with tears in his eyes. “I have lost a friend, a colleague as well as a brother,” he said. “He was a true motivator, especially when it came to my fitness. He always encouraged me to keep trying.”
Ledwaba joined the police in 2007 as a constable. At the time of his death he was working at the Rapid Rail Police Unit for Gauteng South and North West. His passion was to keep fit and in his spare time he was an aerobics instructor.
Mngomezulu confirmed that a case of murder had been opened. He said Ledwaba’s firearm was stolen during the incident which involved more than 10 suspects. The funeral service will be held on 29 March at Bridgeman Hall, Soweto.
