For the love of lego
ROSEBANK - THE world-renowned lego exhibition, The Art of the Brick has come to South Africa and the collection of lego sculptures will be on display at the Zone in Rosebank until 2 August.
The Art of the Brick is created by American artist Nathan Sawaya, a former corporate lawyer who decided to pursue his creative passions through lego.
Sawaya is reported to be the first artist to use lego as his medium, and has garnered a formidable reputation for creating replicas of iconic pieces of historical art and impressive sculptures, capturing the human form entirely out of lego.
Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to view Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring recreated in lego form. There will also be interpretations of the sphinx, and sculptures of Venus de Milo’s The Thinker and Michelanglo’s David.
Among the many impressive works is a 180cm-tall lego dinosaur made of 80 020 lego bricks.
There will also be an interactive play area allowing visitors to build their own lego creations.
The exhibition combines the appreciation of historic art with an element of the whimsical, and an absorbing interpretation of the human condition.
It’s suitable for the young and the young at heart.
