Goliath and Goliath explain the comedy world
JOBURG - A JOURNALIST from this publication caught up with South African comedy group, Goliath and Goliath, who divulged their secrets for taking over the comedy industry.
Most people would die at the thought of getting up on stage and being expected to make people laugh, but Nina Hastie, Jason Goliath, Nicholas Goliath, Donovan Goliath and Richelieu Beaunior do it and do it well – with their own show Awe Mzansi that made it to various theatre’s around Joburg and a show at Parkers in Montecasino coming up.
“Comedy is a craft as well as an art form and if you do it properly it can be a business,” said comedian Nina Hastie.
She explains that being funny with your friends doesn’t mean you can be funny on stage.
It’s about including the audience in a moment and focusing the comedy around that moment before hitting them with the punchline.
Comedy is by no means an easy profession, the comedians agree.
“As a good comedian, you have to die on stage to kill on stage,” said comedian Donovan Goliath.
They all agree that they have died on stage – something that happens all the time – and it is the worst feeling in the world, but killing on stage and making people laugh is the absolute best high they’ve ever experienced.
“What I truly love about comedy is that for the 15 minutes you’re on stage, you forget about everything and you’re truly happy,” said Nicholas Goliath.
City Buzz asked the comedians the controversial question: what they think of Trevor Noah.
All in agreement once more, they expressed their love for Noah’s comedy and appreciation for him opening up a platform for South African comedians to take on the comedy industry on a global level.
Catch Goliath and Goliath at Parkers Comedy and Jive at Montecasino on 30 April.
