Twelve years ago CCTV cameras were installed in and around the streets of Johannesburg, and so far 240 have been installed on a number of street corners with the aim of reducing the level of crime in the city.
Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police, said in the last five years the CBD has not seen a bank robbery, ATM robbery or cash in transit heist.
“Patrol officers are assisted immensely by operators of CCTV cameras, and as soon as the operator suspects crime or wrongdoing, officers will attend to the scene quickly.”
Video footage retrieved from these CCTV cameras show people in their cars being robbed of their personal belongings.

Minnaar told North Eastern Tribune that the stolen goods are returned to those who were victims to the crime as soon as the court has used it for evidence. The CCTV cameras continue to reduce crime and assist officers who are patrolling the area to tackle criminals faster than before, he said.
