UPDATE: Two children killed in JHB building fire

JOBURG - Two children have lost their lives following a fire in Joburg.

UPDATE: 23 June 2015, 15:30 –According to ER24 spokesperson, Pieter Rossouw, two children, both aged two, were declared dead on the scene by paramedics. “Five children under the age of five were in the building when it caught fire,” he said.

“Two of these children were unfortunately trapped and sustained fatal injuries.”

According to Rossouw, ER24 paramedics treated and transported a one-year-old and an elderly patient to Hillbrow Hospital for further treatment.

“The cause of this tragic incident is unknown but will be investigated by local authorities that were on scene,” Rossouw added.

INITIAL REPORT: 22 June 2015, 6:30pm – It has been reported that two children have been killed in a fire. It is believed that a building in the Joburg CBD caught fire by unknown circumstances on Koch Street.

Firefighters have managed to extinguish the flames.

EmergiMed’s Jonathan van Wyk told EWN that when they arrived at the flat on the second floor that was on fire, it turned out to be a creche and two children were declared dead at the scene.

It is believed that it is still unknown at this stage if anybody else was injured in the blaze.
