Candice Rami, a Linksfield resident said, “Some women arrived at my gate in a blue Toyota Corolla asking to speak to my domestic worker. They knew her name, said they were from some organisation and I agreed to let them onto the property.”
According to Rami, as soon as they were through the gate with their vehicle, they jumped out of the car and made their way to the house.
“I could see that I had made a mistake. I locked the security gate and turned the alarm on,” she said.
Rami claimed the women got back into the vehicle and fled the scene. “I do not know what organisation the women claimed to be from, but it was clear that they were not from any such organisation. I am lucky that I have security gates.”
According to Andre Snyman, founder of eBlockwatch, information has come to light from a reliable source of a similar modus operandi in Edenvale whereby four women are targeting and robbing homes. The women obtain the domestic worker’s name from a community member in the area, gain the trust of the domestic worker and gain entry to the property under the false pretence of being from a group that benefits and assists domestic workers.
Snyman said, “The suspects do not fit the profile of regular house robbers, so homeowners and domestic workers lower their guard. This is emphasised by knowing the domestic worker’s name, they claim to want to help the domestic worker so, naturally, they are curious to speak to the con artists.
“There are [other] reports of con artists. They try and trick you and gain your trust. If anyone else has had anything like this happen, please contact eBlockwatch and we will get the word out as to what is happening.”
