According to Parkview police spokesperson, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, the three suspects, one of which was the driver, were already on board the taxi, when two passengers (the victims) boarded at different stops along Jan Smuts Avenue.
The driver took an unfamiliar turn and pulled over at Rutland Avenue.
The victims claimed the three suspects then took out knives and threatened them. The suspects allegedly searched the victims and took several valuables including cellphones, wallets containing money, and a laptop.
The victims claimed the men then pepper-sprayed them and drove off, leaving them on the sidewalk. A passerby assisted them and contacted Parkview police who promptly responded to the call. A description of the taxi was broadcast over the police radio, while officers tracked the stolen cellphones and continued giving leads to other police vehicles.
After a while, Hillbrow police were able to confirm that they had managed to corner a taxi fitting the description. The three suspects were then arrested and the valuables allegedly recovered.
“The arrested suspects are due to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on charges of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, possession of suspected stolen property and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” Ramovha said.
