MEC Nkosi-Malobane applauds Spiderman’s sentencing
JOBURG - Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, welcomed the sentencing of Lucky 'Spiderman' Murovhi, who was given eight life sentences and 861 years imprisonment by the South Gauteng High Court on 31 July for various crimes he committed in and around Joburg.
Murovhi, who was nicknamed Spiderman because of the ease in which he scaled walls to commit his crimes, was found guilty of numerous rape charges in Booysens, Jeppe, Welbekend, Hammanskraal, the Joburg CBD, Diepkloof, Mondeor, Honeydew and surrounding areas. It is also estimated that he was involved in more than 50 cases of house robberies, arson and housebreakings while being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
According to Brigadier Mashadi Selepe of the South African Police Service, “Spiderman Murovhi specialised in terrorising single mothers who lived on their own from about 2008 to 2012. He managed to escape custody on a number of occasions before being re-arrested – he was a master of this.”
Nkosi-Malobane said, “We hope that the sentencing of Murovhi will send a strong message to criminals out there that the criminal justice system will not hesitate to impose harsh sentences on those found guilty of such atrocious crimes. Our hats are off to the police detectives for the thorough investigation, his arrest and putting together a watertight case. This demonstrates our unwavering war against crime.”
